Throwback Thursday

Ok so first off an apology. I know that "Throwback Thursday" shows almost no creativity but I hope to make up for the title in the content. My version of Throwback Thursday is going to be a fun tidbit of technology history that I've been fortunate enough to survive. It won't always be useful information but it should be fun.

NeoCloud Consulting is all about security. You have to be in this day and age because there are some really nasty virus/malware/ransomware attacks out there being created by nefarious people, mostly for monetary gain. Data is more precious that ever! But viruses haven't always been used for financial purposes...

Waaaaay back in the late 80's/early 90's when lots of PCs booted directly from floppy disks there was a virus named...

YANKEE DOODLE.

Yankee Doodle would infect executable files. When one of those files were run on a computer, the virus would load itself into memory. Like a lot of other viruses it propagated by infecting any other executable files on any other disks placed in the computer. But the payload of this virus was PURE EVIL at the time.

At 4PM EVERY DAY THE COMPUTER WOULD PLAY YANKEE DOODLE THROUGH THE PC SPEAKER. <BEEP BEEP BOOP BOOP BEEP BEEP BOOP...>

The horror.

Thankfully you could clean out the virus by putting a write protected Norton Antivirus disk in the drive and running the cleanup process on the PC and then the infected disks. Here's to simpler times!
